Cost

Is it really free?

Yes, completely. There's nothing to pay in the desktop edition or the cloud, and no ads. The only limit is AI screenshot imports: 10 files a month per person, because each one costs real money.

Why is it free? What's the catch?

The goal for now is simply that people find it useful. There are no ads and your data is never sold. Running the cloud costs money, mostly the AI that reads screenshots, which is why AI imports have a monthly limit.

About

Who makes myTickrs?

One person. AI coding agents help with the coding; every change is reviewed and tested before it ships, and the code is public on GitHub.

Is it open source?

It's source-available. The code is public, so you can check what it does with your data and run it yourself for free. The licence (PolyForm Noncommercial) allows any personal, noncommercial use and stops others from reselling it.

Data and privacy

Where is my data?

In the desktop edition, in one SQLite file on your computer. In the cloud, in your myTickrs cloud account, kept apart from every other user's at the database level. See Security and privacy.

What does the cloud store?

Your brokerage accounts, trades and settings, your name and email from Google or Microsoft sign-in, and any market-data keys you add, which are encrypted. It never stores a password or a broker login. The privacy policy has the details.

What does AI import send, and is it kept?

The screenshot or file you choose is sent to an AI model only to read the holdings on it. It isn't saved. CSV, JSON and XML files whose columns are recognized are read without AI.

Can I leave anytime?

Yes. In the desktop edition your data is one file you can copy. Cloud data can be restored to the desktop edition at any time, and deleting your cloud account deletes your data.

Prices

Where do prices come from, and how fresh are they?

Yahoo Finance by default, which needs no key but is unofficial and can lag, so prices may be delayed. Free Finnhub and Twelve Data keys give fresher quotes and cleaner history. Each market asks its own providers first and uses Yahoo Finance only as a fallback.

Which markets does it cover?

42 stock markets, one per country, across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, each with its own time zone, currency, trading hours and holidays. Options are supported in 13 of them, including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and India.

Getting your portfolio in

Does it connect to my broker?

No. myTickrs never asks for your broker login and never places trades. You add trades yourself, or import a screenshot or a file.

Which brokers does import work with?

Any broker whose positions page you can take a screenshot of. The AI reads ticker, quantity, average price and P/L from it; you check every row before saving. CSV, JSON, XML, OFX and QFX exports work too.

Self-hosting

Can I self-host it with a login?

Not yet. The desktop edition has no sign-in, so keep it on your own computer or a trusted network, or put it behind a reverse proxy with its own login. If you want a built-in login, say so in a GitHub issue.

What does it need to run?

Windows, macOS or Linux with Node.js 24 or newer. The installer offers to install Node.js if it's missing. See Download.

Advice and taxes

Is this investment or tax advice?

No. myTickrs is a record-keeping tool. It works out cost basis (FIFO) and realized P&L, but it doesn't produce tax forms or cover country-specific tax rules, and it never tells you what to buy or sell.
